DALLAS – With a pair of outstanding series-opening performances last Friday night, Rice junior RHP Matt Canterino and Southern Miss junior RHP Walker Powell share the Conference USA Pitcher of the Week award. Canterino struck out 10 and surrendered just one walk in seven shutout innings vs. No. 18 Louisiana Tech, while Powell threw a complete-game with just one run allowed at Middle Tennessee. Charlotte senior C Harris Yett took the C-USA Hitter of the Week award after hitting safely in all four games, with a pair of multiple-hit games in leading the 49ers to a road series victory at FIU. All Conference USA weekly awards are presented by Top of the World.
Canterino fired 7.0 shutout innings on the way to a victory over No. 18 ranked Louisiana Tech on April 26. The junior right-hander scattered six and just one walk while striking out 10 batters. Canterino held the opposing hitters to a composite .231 batting average, as the Southlake, Texas, native moved into sole possession of the 10th place on Rice’s career strikeouts list with 313 Ks (passing multi all-conference honoree Austin Kubitza). In the win, Canterino posted double-digit strikeouts for the third time this season and 12th time in his career.
Powell registered a career-high 10 strikeouts in posting his third complete game of the season. In 10 assignments this season, Powell has put together a team-best six quality starts, as he limited the Blue Raiders to just six hits and no walks. The only run he allowed was a solo homer in the second inning. The Fayetteville, Arkansas, native retired 10 in a row at one point – sitting down the Blue Raiders in order five times. Powell did not let more than one runner reach base in an inning, until he gave up three-straight singles with one out in the ninth. He followed that with two strikeouts to end the game.
Yett led the 49ers to a key road series victory at FIU, while putting together a .529 (9-for-17) week at the plate. Yett started off with a walk, single and run scored against Wake Forest on Tuesday before opening up the FIU series with a single, walk and RBI in a 6-3 victory. The senior catcher followed that up tying a career-high with five hits in seven trips to the plate with a double, two RBI and three runs scored as Charlotte erased a 9-4 deficit in the eighth to win 10-9 in 14 innings. On Sunday, Yett added two more hits, including his 20th double of the season, with another run driven in during a narrow 2-1 loss. For the week, the Charlotte native drove in four runs, scored four times, smacked a pair of doubles and walked three times.
