DALLAS – Southern Miss senior right-hander Walker Powell threw a complete-game shutout at McNeese State on Saturday, striking out six batters with no walks to earn the Conference USA Pitcher of the Week award. The C-USA Hitter of the Week honor went to Louisiana Tech junior OF Steele Netterville, who batted .556 with two doubles, four home runs and 14 RBI, while scoring eight times. All Conference USA weekly awards are presented by Top of the World.
Powell threw a complete-game shutout at McNeese State on Saturday, striking out six batters and walking none. He finished the game throwing an efficient 110 pitches, with 74 going for strikes. It was Powell’s fifth complete game of his career and his second shutout. In three starts this season, the Fayetteville, Arkansas, native has thrown at least seven innings with three quality starts for Southern Miss, posting a 2-0 record with a 0.82 ERA. This is Powell’s fourth career C-USA Pitcher of the Week honor.
Netterville batted .556 (10-for-18) last week, getting on base at a .591 clip and posting a 1.333 slugging percentage. He hit safely in all five games, with four multi-hit outings, drew a pair of walks and was hit by a pitch. Netterville doubled twice, hit four home runs and drove in 14 runs, while scoring eight times. On Sunday, the Shreveport, Louisiana, native closed out a four-game sweep of Maine by homering twice and driving in a career-high seven runs. Netterville was also named a National Player of the Week by Collegiate Baseball on Monday.
